The word Surah (Arabic: سورة) has several layers of meaning that help define why the chapters of the Quran are called so:
A “Wall” or “Fence”: Just as a wall (Sūr) surrounds a city to protect and define it, a Surah surrounds a group of verses (Ayat), providing them with a distinct boundary and structural integrity.
A Building or Story: It can refer to a story/level of a building. This implies that the Quran is a complete structure, and each Surah is a distinct level or compartment of that edifice.
The most significant way Surahs are categorized is by the period of revelation. This is not just a geographic label but a thematic and stylistic one.

Scholars have traditionally categorized the 114 Surahs into four main groups based on their length and placement:
Al-Sab’ al-Tiwal (The Seven Long Ones): These are the massive chapters at the beginning (Al-Baqarah to At-Tawbah), covering complex laws and long prophetic histories.
Al-Mi’un (The Hundreds): Surahs that contain roughly 100 verses or slightly more (e.g., Yusuf, Ibrahim).
Al-Mathani (The Oft-Repeated): Surahs with fewer than 100 verses that are frequently recited.
Al-Mufassal (The Divided): The shorter Surahs at the end of the Quran (starting from Surah Qaf or Al-Hujurat). These are further divided into:
Tiwal (Long): Qaf to Al-Buruj.
Awsat (Medium): At-Tariq to Al-Bayyinah.
Qisar (Short): Az-Zalzalah to An-Nas.
While the Surah and Ayah (verse) are the only divinely ordained divisions, scholars added others for ease of study and recitation:
Juz (Para): The Quran is divided into 30 equal parts so it can be completed in one month.
Manzil: Divided into 7 parts to allow for completion in one week.
Ruku: Smaller thematic paragraphs within a Surah, usually where a reader might pause during prayer.

Longest Surah: Al-Baqarah (286 verses)
Shortest Surah: Al-Kawthar (3 verses)
Standard Opening: 113 out of 114 Surahs begin with the Basmala (“In the name of Allah…”). The exception is Surah At-Tawbah.
